A resident-led, nonpartisan community initiative

Bring Zhenhua Park's Lawn Back to the Community

The central lawn at Zhenhua Park has been unavailable for extended periods in the name of lawn maintenance. We support necessary maintenance, but this public space should also be available for residents, children, families, seniors, and responsible pet owners to use.

You can join the OpenChat without publicly sharing your real name or phone number.

A park should not be judged only by how perfect its grass looks, but by how often residents can actually use it.

A public lawn should not only look good. It should be available for the public to use.

The issue

The Question Is Not Whether the Lawn Needs Maintenance. It Is Whether the Lawn Is Actually Usable.

Zhenhua Park is a recently reopened neighborhood park, and its central lawn is one of its most important open activity spaces.

Resident observation
  1. 01

Based on long-term observations by nearby residents, the lawn appears to have been unavailable for much of the park's existence. This is a resident observation, not an official city statistic.

  2. 02

Long or unclear closures reduce the practical value of a public facility.

  3. 03

Missing ropes, unclear notices, or inconsistent site conditions can also create confusion and conflict between residents.

  4. 04

This initiative is asking for transparent, proportionate, evidence-based management, not an end to maintenance.

Practical changes

What We Are Asking For

Five management changes that can be discussed, implemented, and measured over time.

01

Increase the Lawn's Actual Open Time

The lawn should generally remain open except during necessary repair, turf establishment, or clearly identified safety concerns.

02

Publish the Reason and Expected Reopening Date

Every closure should clearly state its reason, affected area, start date, and expected reopening date.

03

Use Rotating Maintenance Zones

Where possible, maintenance should rotate between sections rather than closing the entire lawn for extended periods.

04

Create Objective Closure and Reopening Criteria

The city should publish the conditions used to close and reopen the lawn, such as turf coverage, repair progress, or safety conditions.

05

Make Public Use a Core Management Goal

Appearance, durability, and actual public availability should all be treated as measures of success, rather than optimizing only for untouched grass.

Shared space

This Is Not Only a Pet Owner Issue

A genuinely usable neighborhood lawn matters to everyone who wants to spend time, move, or rest close to home.

  • Nearby residents
  • Children
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Seniors
  • People who want to sit, read, picnic, walk, or play
  • Responsible pet owners
  • Anyone who values usable public space

This is not a dog park campaign, and it does not seek exclusive access for pets. The issue is whether a shared community lawn is meaningfully available to the whole neighborhood.

FAQ

A few questions, answered plainly

Read All FAQs
Are you against lawn maintenance?

No. We support necessary and proportionate maintenance. The concern is whether closures are excessively long, unnecessarily broad, or insufficiently explained.

Is this a campaign by dog owners?

Responsible pet owners are part of the initiative, but this is not a dog park campaign and it does not seek exclusive access for pets. It concerns a shared lawn intended for the whole community.

Are you asking for the lawn to remain open all year without exception?

No. Repair, turf establishment, extreme weather, or a clear safety issue may justify temporary closure. We are asking for limited, proportionate closures with clear notices and objective reopening standards.

Why not simply contact the city?

Formal requests and direct contact with the city are part of the effort. Community feedback helps show that this is a broader public-space management issue rather than one person's complaint.
